USC’s Inclusive Strategy for Advancing Artificial Intelligence

USC is leading the AI revolution in higher education through two key initiatives announced by Interim President Beong-Soo Kim: the President’s AI Strategy Committee and the inaugural AI Summit. The 15-member committee, chaired by Dean Geoffrey Garrett, includes deans, senior administrators, and diverse faculty aimed at integrating AI across various disciplines, ensuring an inclusive approach beyond just advanced computing. Their primary goal is to reshape education by equipping all students with ethical AI skills, promoting responsible use, and developing interdisciplinary courses. Engagement strategies include workshops, a student hackathon for AI assistant development, and sharing insights at the AI Summit featuring Eric Schmidt and OpenAI’s Leah Belsky. The committee advocates for responsible engagement with AI, highlighting the need for critical thinking regarding originality and societal impacts as AI transforms education. USC aims to be at the forefront of harnessing AI’s potential while addressing the ethical responsibilities that come with it.
