OpenAI’s ChatGPT has resolved its notorious em dash fixation, much to the relief of writers and editors. For almost two years, users complained about the AI’s tendency to insert em dashes against explicit instructions. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a “small-but-happy win,” confirming that users can now request ChatGPT to avoid em dashes, and the AI will comply. Although some users still reported intermittent issues, the fix heralds improvements in the chatbot’s “custom instructions” feature, enabling more control over writing styles and preferences. In addition to this punctuation enhancement, OpenAI introduced a new Group Chats feature, transforming ChatGPT into a collaborative tool akin to WhatsApp or Slack. This pilot mode allows users to create chat groups of up to 20, facilitating brainstorming and discussions alongside the AI.
