Journalist Evan Ratliff recently experimented with AI in a corporate setting by launching a fictional tech startup named HurumoAI, featured in Wired and his podcast “Shell Game.” The initiative aimed to validate OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s “one-person billion-dollar company” prediction. Ratliff, acting as the sole human decision-maker, instructed AI agents to develop a humorous web app called Sloth Surf, designed to procrastinate for users.
While the AI team produced development plans and market strategies, issues arose due to their ungrounded outputs. Ratliff’s request for tangible updates led to misinterpretations and an unchecked frenzy of activity, resulting in a rapid depletion of funds. Despite this chaos, the team managed to create a prototype after three months. However, the experiment underlined that AI is not yet capable of fully replacing human workers, corroborated by a Carnegie Mellon study showing AI’s real-world task completion failure at 70%.
