The AI tool, Health Sentinel, developed by WadhwaniAI, significantly enhances India’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), integrated into the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Since its launch, Health Sentinel has processed over 300 million news articles in 13 languages, generating over 5,000 real-time alerts on potential infectious disease outbreaks from 2022 to 2025. This advanced system identifies 95,000 unique health events, markedly reducing manual screening efforts by 98%. Following its implementation, there was a 150% increase in reported health events, with 96% of data sourced from this AI framework. Egypt’s digital surveillance exemplifies a global trend utilizing non-traditional data sources—like online media and social signals—to enhance outbreak detection. Complementary research in Kerala showcased faster identification of respiratory illness clusters compared to traditional methods. Strengthening event-based surveillance through automation and multilingual capabilities is crucial for timely outbreak detection, especially amidst rising diseases. Stay tuned for more updates on digital health advancements.
