Navigating Ethics: Why Some Students Hesitate to Use AI in Their Schoolwork

Louisa County school district in Virginia is pioneering professional development for educators on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching. The focus has shifted from merely helping teachers use AI for tasks like drafting emails to incorporating it into student learning. However, students have expressed resistance to AI, often perceiving it as cheating, as noted by Marcia Flores, a career and technical education teacher. This skepticism is surprising, considering that 69% of teens regularly use AI tools for information gathering, according to a recent College Board report. Kenneth Bouwens, the district’s AI lead, emphasized the need to help students understand the ethical distinctions of AI use in educational settings versus personal use. The district plans to clarify these boundaries, possibly through visual aids like a ‘traffic light’ graphic, highlighting appropriate AI usage in assignments. Understanding and correctly utilizing AI in education remains a key focus for Louisa County this year.
