Westinghouse Joins Forces with Google Cloud to Develop Advanced AI Platform

Westinghouse CEO Dan Sumner emphasizes the critical role of AI-driven decision-making in making nuclear power a viable investment for utilities amid rising energy demands. Central to their success is Westinghouse’s AI readiness, showcased by their proprietary infrastructure, Hive, designed to comply with nuclear regulations. Additionally, the generative AI assistant, Bertha, efficiently accesses 75 years of nuclear documentation, streamlining processes. This innovation primarily focuses on the construction phase, which traditionally comprised 60% of reactor costs and relied on outdated management methods. By leveraging AI, Westinghouse transforms decades of information to enhance construction management. Their advanced system integrates AI models with WNEXUS, a 3D digital twin of reactors, enabling accurate predictions of bottlenecks, optimization of task sequences, staffing adjustments, and supply chain considerations. This strategic use of AI positions Westinghouse as a leader in the nuclear sector, reinforcing its potential for future investments.
