Transforming Pediatric Heart Care: CAST Research Fellow Dr. Qi Zhang Pioneers AI Innovations

Dr. Qi Zhang, a 2025–26 CAST Research Fellow and associate professor in the School of Information Technology, is pioneering research to enhance pediatric heart diagnostics through artificial intelligence. His AI-assisted system aims to provide faster, equitable cardiac care tailored to children’s unique needs, crucial for early diagnosis and better patient outcomes.

The project, in collaboration with OSF HealthCare and Illinois State University, converts complex ECG data into actionable insights while addressing data accuracy, security, and healthcare disparities. By enabling local doctors to share ECG data securely, the AI system aims to reduce diagnosis times, especially for rural families far from specialists.

Student involvement is vital; under Zhang’s mentorship, they contribute to coding and data analysis, gaining hands-on experience in applying AI within healthcare. Looking ahead, the team plans to expand the system to integrate real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, further solidifying their impact on pediatric cardiology.
