AI Agents: Catalysts of Identity and Security Challenges for Organizations

A new report from Rubrik Zero Labs reveals that non-human identities (NHIs) outnumber human users 82-to-1, significantly complicating identity security. This alarming trend comes as 90% of global leaders cite identity-related cyberattacks as a primary concern. NHIs are expanding the attack surface faster than security teams can manage. Despite this, 89% of organizations intend to hire specialized identity security staff within the next year, and 87% plan to switch their Identity Access Management (IAM) providers due to security fears. Social engineering remains a key attack vector, with 86% of web app attacks relying on stolen credentials. Even more concerning, 58% of security leaders predict that at least half of cyberattacks next year will involve AI agents. While the landscape is evolving, familiar attack methods persist, prompting security teams to adapt their strategies to protect new systems. As NHIs pose challenges, established threats require renewed focus and vigilance.
