Richard Johnson Appointed to Oversee National Security Risk Mitigation at OpenAI

OpenAI has appointed Richard Johnson as its new National Security Risk Mitigation Lead, leveraging over two decades of experience in international security and nuclear nonproliferation. Previously, Johnson held senior positions in the U.S. government, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Policy. His career also includes roles at the White House as Director for Nonproliferation on the National Security Council, and significant experience at the U.S. Department of State, particularly in the Office of Iran Nuclear Implementation. Johnson’s background extends to early political experience in California and leadership at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, where he focused on nuclear fuel cycle and verification policy. He holds a Master of Public Affairs in International Relations from Princeton University and a bachelor’s degree in Government and Asian Studies from Claremont McKenna College. His expertise will help navigate the intersection of AI and national defense.
