Report Reveals That Nearly 70% of AI-Generated Music Streams on Deezer Are Fraudulent

According to Deezer, up to 70% of streams of AI-generated music on its platform may be fraudulent. While AI music constitutes just 0.5% of overall streams, fraudsters exploit bots to inflate listening numbers, enabling significant royalty earnings from a limited number of AI tracks. Thibault Roucou, Deezer’s director of royalties, emphasized that the manipulation is aimed at profiting from royalties, prompting the company to invest in countermeasures. Deezer has developed a tool capable of identifying fully AI-generated music, which includes various genres from pop to mood tracks, and has started blocking royalty payments for identified fraudulent streams. Despite AI music accounting for 18% of uploads—about 20,000 tracks daily—Deezer is actively working to remove such content from recommendations. The global streaming market, valued at $20.4 billion, remains a lucrative target for fraud, impacting legitimate artists and exacerbated by generative AI’s rise.
