A federal judge has temporarily barred OpenAI from using the names “Cameos” and “CameoVideo” in its Sora artificial intelligence video generation products due to an ongoing trademark dispute with Chicago-based company Baron App. U.S. District Judge Eumi K. Lee issued a restraining order following Baron’s lawsuit, alleging trademark infringement and unfair competition. Baron claims exclusive rights to its “Cameo” product, allowing fans to receive personalized celebrity videos from notable figures like Snoop Dogg and Jon Bon Jovi. The legal clash intensified when OpenAI updated its Sora tool in September, launching a feature also named Cameos, which led to over one million downloads shortly after. Judge Lee ordered OpenAI to cease using any confusingly similar marks and scheduled a hearing for December 19. Baron’s CEO hopes for a resolution to focus on connecting fans and celebrities during the holiday season, while OpenAI contests the complaint, emphasizing the commonality of the term “cameo.”
