Google Responds to Viral Rumors: Is Gmail Training Gemini AI Using Your Emails?

Google has addressed recent viral claims suggesting it trains its AI using Gmail data. A report by Malwarebytes stated that Google altered its settings to automatically utilize users’ emails for AI training, prompting widespread backlash online. In response, Google clarified via a post on X, asserting that it has not changed any settings and does not use Gmail content to train its Gemini AI model. The company emphasized its commitment to transparency and user consent regarding terms and policies. Following this clarification, Malwarebytes revised its report, attributing the misunderstanding to Google’s vague wording about settings rather than any actual policy change. While Google does not leverage Gmail for AI training, it does train its AI on conversations users have with its chatbot unless they disable the Gemini Apps Activity setting. Other companies, like Anthropic and Meta, similarly utilize user interactions for AI training and personalized content, reflecting a broader industry trend.
