Samuel U. Rodger’s Health Center has implemented Ambient Assist, an artificial intelligence tool by NextGen Healthcare, transforming how medical providers manage their workloads. Family nurse practitioner Brianna Hoisington reports that since using Ambient Assist, she significantly reduces her administrative tasks, enabling her to focus more on patient care during her ten-hour shifts. The AI records and compiles conversations between patients and providers, allowing for nearly complete medical charts by appointment’s end. Hoisington appreciates that the tool fosters stronger connections with pediatric patients, letting her engage with them while minimizing computer use. Although some staff remain hesitant about AI, many recognize its efficiency, preserving critical thinking while expediting administrative duties. Hoisington believes such AI tools could become standard across healthcare facilities. Competing institutions like St. Luke’s and Children’s Mercy are not using this tool, while the University of Kansas Health System employs a similar AI tool called Abridge for patient summaries.
