In 2024, Microsoft launched Fara-7B, a groundbreaking small language model (SLM) optimized for computer use tasks. Unlike traditional models, Fara-7B operates as a computer use agent (CUA), utilizing devices to complete user tasks such as form filling and browsing. With just 7 billion parameters, it delivers outstanding performance while maintaining local data privacy and reducing latency. The model is designed for hands-on exploration and community feedback, emphasizing responsible use in sandboxed environments. Fara-7B features a novel synthetic data generation pipeline for training, enabling a detailed understanding of user interactions. Currently available on Microsoft Foundry and Hugging Face, Fara-7B empowers users to automate routine web tasks, facilitating tasks like shopping and booking reservations. Safety measures, including an auditing system and user consent checkpoints, are integral to its design. Through ongoing evaluations and feedback, Microsoft aims to further enhance this promising technology and expand the applications of small, efficient CUAs.
