On May 7, 2020, Stephen Albright faced a life-altering challenge after suffering a stroke due to an arteriovenous malformation. A survivor of testicular cancer, Albright, a former Tar Heel football player, began experiencing aphasia—a communication disability often linked to strokes. Despite doctors’ skepticism about his recovery, he embarked on intensive rehabilitation, determined to regain his language skills and return to his consulting job in New York City. His journey inspired him to create AphasiaGPT, an AI-powered speech therapy app that aids others recovering from aphasia. Launched in early 2023, the app offers features like a word finder, personalized news, and conversation simulations. Currently used by over 300 individuals, AphasiaGPT has received positive feedback from speech-language pathologists. Albright envisions future enhancements, including integrations with wearable tech. His story exemplifies resilience and the transformative impact of AI in aiding communication recovery.
