A study by researchers at MIT has raised concerns about the cognitive impacts of relying on AI tools like ChatGPT. The research involved 54 students divided into three groups: one using ChatGPT, another using Google, and a third relying solely on their own knowledge. Using EEG scans, results showed that those dependent on AI exhibited reduced brain activity, weaker memory, and struggles with quoting their own work. A subsequent phase revealed that participants who switched from AI to traditional methods improved, while those who transitioned to AI continued to show lower cognitive function. The study highlights potential long-term educational risks associated with AI reliance, emphasizing the need for further research into how these tools affect learning. Additionally, the environmental cost of AI usage was noted, with significant water consumption for server cooling and increased energy expenses tied to user interactions.
