Justice is increasingly delayed worldwide, with 53 million unresolved cases in one South Asian country alone, many pending for over 30 years. The shortage of judges only exacerbates this issue. However, AI tools, particularly Large Language Models and automation, are providing effective solutions. For instance, Argentina’s AI assistant, Prometea, has boosted legal case processing nearly 300%, handling 490 cases monthly compared to 130 previously. Similarly, Egypt’s automated transcription system, launched in 2024, is significantly improving court efficiencies. While AI is transforming judicial systems, it also raises challenges, such as AI-generated evidence that can misguide legal arguments, as seen in recent UK High Court cases, resulting in wasted resources and fines. Senior judge Dame Victoria Sharp cautions that improper use of AI could threaten the integrity of justice and public trust. The impact of AI on legal systems is profound, uneven, and often unpredictable, necessitating cautious integration alongside judicial safeguards.
