Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in Singapore has revolutionized complex spine surgeries through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). With the aging population in Singapore, cases of complex spinal deformities, like degenerative scoliosis, are on the rise. TTSH’s orthopaedic department has successfully performed over 250 AI-assisted surgeries since 2021. AI enhances pre-surgical planning, allowing for precise placement of screws and rods, improving accuracy and reducing surgery time by up to 20%. Hospital stays post-surgery have decreased by nearly 50%, with patients typically recovering in about three to six days. Notably, no patients have faced serious complications or required revision surgeries. Although the cost for AI-assisted surgeries is slightly higher due to custom-made rods, many patients, including 74-year-old Jenny Ee, find the benefits—like significantly improved quality of life—worth the investment. The integration of AI showcases a substantial advancement in surgical technology and patient care, promising better outcomes for complex conditions.
