Government Aims to Lower Power Bills with AI-Driven Detection Strategies

The Central Government of India is set to reduce electricity bills by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to combat power theft and wastage. As stated by Shashank Mishra, Joint Secretary of the Power Ministry, AI tools will identify technical issues and faulty wiring in homes, significantly decreasing electricity wastage, which often leads to inflated consumer bills. This initiative will allow distribution companies to rectify problems swiftly, ensuring efficient electricity usage. The government is also exploring the use of larger AI models like ChatGPT for improved decision-making and 24/7 network monitoring. Experts believe that with proper implementation, India can enhance its power generation capacity, meeting both domestic and international energy demands effectively. Additionally, the recently proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025 aims to standardize electricity pricing, eliminate hidden subsidies, and ensure affordable energy for industries while safeguarding subsidies for farmers and low-income families. This proactive approach is anticipated to provide significant relief to consumers and promote sustainable energy usage.
