Rise in AI-Related Cheating Cases Reported at UK Universities

A significant rise in university students in the UK misusing AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, has been reported, with nearly 7,000 confirmed cheating cases during the 2023-24 academic year. This equates to 5.1 cases per 1,000 students, a marked increase from 1.6 per 1,000 in the previous year. By May, the figure was expected to rise to about 7.5 cases per 1,000. Research suggests these numbers may be just the “tip of the iceberg” as many cases likely go undetected. Notably, 27% of responding universities did not track AI misuse separately. While some students use AI to assist with brainstorming or structuring their work—beneficial for those with learning difficulties—others misuse it for academic dishonesty. In contrast, institutions like UCLA are exploring AI use for administrative and educational purposes, highlighting the dual nature of AI tools in academia.
