Meta recently tried to acquire Safe Superintelligence, an AI startup founded by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, but the offer was rejected. Following this setback, Mark Zuckerberg sought to recruit the company’s CEO, Daniel Gross. Meta is looking to bolster its AI team and has plans to hire Gross and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, and also acquire a stake in their venture capital fund, NFDG. The interest in Gross comes after a previous $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, which included recruiting its founder, Alexandr Wang. Safe Superintelligence was valued at $32 billion during a recent funding round, and Sutskever declined both the acquisition and an employment offer from Meta. With these moves, Zuckerberg’s recruitment strategy intensifies the competition among tech giants and startups for AI talent, focusing on developing advanced large language models and artificial general intelligence (AGI).
