While Europe May Lag in AI Hardware, It Can Excel in AI Applications

At the TNW Conference in Amsterdam, Dutch tech leaders expressed that while Europe lags behind the US in AI infrastructure, it has the potential to excel in AI applications. Jeroen van Glabbeek, CEO of CM.com, emphasized that European firms should leverage existing US infrastructure to develop new software, as major tech companies plan to invest over $300 billion in AI-related data centers and cloud services by 2025. He noted that Europe has historically produced successful apps like Spotify and Grammarly and can continue this trend in the AI era. Other leaders echoed this sentiment, highlighting the lucrative opportunities in the application layer rather than competing in deep hardware technology. To maximize this potential, they called for increased investor risk appetite, streamlined public funding, and local procurement, while stressing the need for innovation-friendly regulations to foster growth in the sector.
