Revitalizing Measurement Science Education: Enhancing Skills for Pervasive AI Applications

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools poses challenges to traditional teaching methods in measurement science and technology. Roman Z. Morawski from Warsaw University of Technology and his colleagues propose a modernized curriculum that emphasizes mathematical modeling and integrates ethical considerations. This approach prepares students to utilize AI effectively in sectors like biomedical engineering and autonomous vehicles, addressing potential ethical issues highlighted by the 2024 EU Artificial Intelligence Act. Researchers have cataloged a growing body of literature on AI’s role in measurement, noting significant productivity post-2015. The curriculum must adapt to include a meta-model of measurement that tackles uncertainty and enhances technical and non-technical competencies. A systematic review of 512 articles from 2021-2023 underscores the importance of explainable AI, vital for understanding AI-generated measurement uncertainties. This comprehensive restructuring aims to equip future engineers with the skills for responsible development in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, ensuring the safe application of measurement innovations.
