A recent study conducted with over 6,000 researchers from the Max Planck Society and Fraunhofer Society reveals significant insights into the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research. Researchers actively use AI for various tasks—42.4% report familiarity and 25.9% use it daily. Gender disparities exist, with women less familiar with AI, a trend attributed to knowledge rather than negative attitudes. Legal uncertainties, lack of training, and limited tool accessibility hinder wider AI use. Interestingly, while 69.2% believe AI will revolutionize their fields, views on societal impacts vary: 40.6% see more opportunities than risks. The study highlights the need for clearer guidelines and institutional support to foster AI adoption in research. Researchers employ AI for tasks such as idea testing and drafting papers, emphasizing its growing role as a co-creator in research methodologies. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective policy-making and ensuring responsible use of AI in academia.
