Three-dimensional modeling has become more accessible for blind and low-vision (BLV) programmers thanks to A11yShape, an innovative AI-assisted system. Traditional 3D modeling relies heavily on visual feedback, making it challenging for BLV users. A11yShape transforms this experience by replacing visual elements with structured code, AI-generated descriptions, and logical reasoning, enabling independent creation and verification of 3D models. Built on OpenSCAD, the tool features a Code Editor, AI Assistance Panel, and Model Panel, linking various representations of an object for effective learning. A study with BLV programmers demonstrated high usability, with participants expressing empowerment as they successfully built complex models, such as helicopters. While challenges in spatial understanding remained, adaptive workflows emerged, showcasing the tool’s potential for creative independence. A11yShape aims to expand access to vital creative tools, paving the way for future developments in education, workforce inclusion, and fabrication for BLV users.
