Thinking Machines Lab, an AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has secured a $2 billion seed round, valuing the six-month-old company at $10 billion. While the specifics of the company’s work are unclear, Murati’s reputation and the recruitment of notable AI experts have drawn significant investor interest, making this potentially the largest seed round in history. The funding round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with contributions from Sarah Guo’s Conviction Partners.

Murati, who previously oversaw the creation of key OpenAI products like ChatGPT and DALL-E, left the organization last September amid leadership disputes. After former CEO Sam Altman’s ousting by the board in November 2023, she briefly served as interim CEO before his swift reinstatement. Several former OpenAI colleagues, including co-founder John Schulman, have also joined Thinking Machines Lab, further bolstering its expertise.
