OpenAI Shifts Initial AI Hardware Order from China’s Luxshare to Foxconn

OpenAI is set to launch its first AI hardware product, shifting manufacturing from Chinese company Luxshare to Foxconn, aiming to release the product by 2026 or 2027. This strategic change responds to supply chain diversification and a preference to avoid production in China, with manufacturing planned in the U.S. or Vietnam. The device, designed in a pen-style format, will integrate handwriting input, voice interaction, and ChatGPT capabilities, emphasizing an audio-first approach to technology. OpenAI is also working on a broader lineup of screenless devices, which may include smart glasses and audio-centric products. This focus on screenless designs aims to mitigate user addiction, a priority highlighted by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. OpenAI’s audio AI models are being enhanced, with the next iteration expected by early 2026, aligning with industry trends toward voice as the primary interface.
