OpenAI is shifting the manufacturing of its first AI-powered consumer device, codenamed “Gumdrop,” from Luxshare to Foxconn, marking a strategic move away from China-based production. This transition aims to diversify OpenAI’s supply chain amid concerns over manufacturing in mainland China. The innovative product, designed by former Apple designer Jony Ive, is still in the design phase, with a launch anticipated between 2026 and 2027. The device may be assembled in Vietnam or the U.S., aligning with OpenAI’s commitment to reducing reliance on China. Foxconn, a major partner for tech giants like Apple and Google, is set to play a crucial role in this project. The smart device could resemble a small wearable or smart pen, featuring capabilities like note conversion into ChatGPT, embodying OpenAI’s vision for an “ambiently aware” AI companion beyond traditional smartphones. This shift potentially creates new growth opportunities for Foxconn in the burgeoning AI hardware market.
