AI Gigafactory: German Tech Giants’ Billion-Euro Ambitions Currently Unfulfilled

The EU is offering financial support of 20 billion euros to foster AI gigafactories in Europe, aiming to compete with the AI landscapes of the U.S. and China. A proposed joint initiative among five major German tech companies—Deutsche Telekom, Ionos, SAP, Siemens, and Schwarz Group—to create a shared AI data center has fallen through due to disagreements over leadership and location. Consequently, independent proposals are now being submitted by some of these companies. Key challenges include selecting a suitable site, as regions in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia vie for the project, although Bavaria’s high electricity costs raise concerns. Additionally, the business model for the gigafactory is unclear, with estimated investments needing to reach between three to six billion euros. Deutsche Telekom is exploring partnerships with Nvidia on a related project, which will run concurrently but may involve fewer resources than initially planned for the EU-backed initiative.
