Grok App Continues to Offer Sexualized AI Deepfake Images for Subscribers

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has curtailed its AI image generation feature, Grok, due to backlash over its potential for creating sexualized content. Now limited to paying subscribers, Grok is prohibited from producing deepfake images with sexualized content on X. Reports highlighted inappropriate uses of Grok, including images of public figures such as Catherine, Princess of Wales, prompting urgent concerns from the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom. The European Commission is also probing the issue, with spokesperson Thomas Regnier labeling the generated content as both “illegal” and “disgusting.” Despite X’s warnings against illegal content, users are still circumventing restrictions for nonconsensual image generation. The UK government is drafting legislation to ban nudification technologies, risking prison terms and fines for offenders. Musk asserted that users producing illegal content via Grok will face equivalent consequences as if they uploaded it directly. Nonetheless, the standalone Grok app continues to enable such imagery creation.
