Revolutionizing Student Support: The Impact of UH’s AI Chatbots

The University of Hawaiʻi has made significant strides in enhancing student success through the deployment of proactive AI chatbots across its 10 campuses. Named ‘Bow’ and ‘Moa,’ these chatbots have achieved an impressive 94% opt-in rate, demonstrating strong student engagement with 72,089 texts sent from August to December 2025. The chatbots provide vital 24/7 support, answering 4,294 questions autonomously and saving staff around 357 hours. They also facilitate connections to university resources, flagging over 2,500 students for further assistance, thereby ensuring no student feels alone on their academic journey. Notably, strong engagement was recorded at Honolulu CC and UH West Oʻahu, with rates of 62% and 61%, respectively. This initiative follows UH Mānoa’s recognition at the 2025 EdSights PERSIST Summit, highlighting its commitment to leveraging student feedback for continuous improvement. By integrating AI technology, the university is setting a new standard for student support and success.
