Clients Press for AI Chatbots to Bypass Legal Representation

The Law Society has highlighted a growing demand from clients for AI chatbots that enable self-service without lawyer intervention, amidst concerns about regulatory clarity on client data anonymization for generative AI tools. In response to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s proposal for an AI Growth Lab, the society emphasized that large firms are uncertain about the technology’s ability to meet legal accuracy and conformity standards. Concerns were raised about unregulated chatbot developments lacking client confidentiality protections, posing risks to consumers. While firms are eager for clarification on confidentiality duties, they have low interest in modifying these obligations. The society advocated for an AI Growth Lab managed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to navigate these challenges. Overall, they assert that the legal sector’s challenges stem from uncertainty and costs rather than regulatory burdens, stressing the necessity for AI innovation within the legal framework.
