Google is evolving its artificial intelligence integration within Gmail, shifting from the dedicated Gemini side panel to “in-line” AI experiences. Subscribers to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra in the U.S. will notice this transition as the side panel is removed from the web version. The update reflects a strategic move away from traditional chatbot-style interfaces, embedding AI capabilities directly into users’ inbox workflows. Previously accessed via a spark icon near the profile picture, the Gemini panel allowed for summarizing emails, drafting responses, and retrieving information. The new design activates these functions contextually, with AI Overviews summarizing email chains and Suggested Replies providing relevant responses based on conversation context. Additionally, the upgraded Proofread tool offers style and tone suggestions alongside grammar corrections. While personal accounts on premium tiers are affected, Google Workspace users can still access the side panel, indicating a broader aim to seamlessly integrate AI into the overall email experience.
