McKinsey Declares AI Expertise Essential for Job Interviews

McKinsey & Company has integrated artificial intelligence into its hiring process, particularly for U.S. graduate roles, by introducing an “AI interview” format. Candidates must use the internal AI tool, Lilli, to solve business problems reflective of client assignments. This new approach emphasizes the necessity of collaboration with AI as a baseline skill rather than a bonus, focusing on decision-making, judgment, and communication. Applicants are assessed on how effectively they engage with Lilli to organize ideas and refine recommendations, rather than on technical AI expertise. This AI-driven interview runs alongside traditional assessments evaluating problem-solving and leadership. McKinsey’s leadership acknowledges that AI is becoming central to its operations, with CEO Bob Sternfels noting the rapid increase in AI agents within the firm, indicating that new hires must be equipped to work alongside AI from day one. This shift prepares candidates for a workplace where AI collaboration is essential.
