Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, in collaboration with over 50 partners, are developing AI solutions to enhance the recyclability of plastic packaging through the KIOptiPack project. This initiative aims to optimize packaging design and processing while integrating recycled materials to comply with upcoming EU regulations, which mandate at least 35% recycled plastic in packaging by 2030. The project utilizes AI-driven tools and a collaborative data system to connect information across the plastics value chain, improving design-for-recycling strategies and material compatibility. These tools assess fluctuating material properties and facilitate adjustments in manufacturing processes, ensuring high-quality outputs from recycled materials. Despite rising recycled plastic use, demand is projected to outstrip supply by 30% by 2030. The integration of AI and cross-sector collaboration is pivotal in addressing this shortfall and advancing towards a circular economy in packaging.
