Researchers from Dakota State University, in collaboration with Safety Insurance, developed an AI chatbot named “Axlerod” aimed at enhancing the efficiency of independent insurance agents. According to their findings, detailed in a pre-print paper, Axlerod assists with information retrieval tasks, aiding agents in saving an average of 2.42 seconds per search. The chatbot functions using Google Gemini 2.5 Pro, linked to Safety Insurance’s internal systems, facilitating faster task completions.
While Axlerod shows promise, the actual return on investment varies based on usage. With an estimated cost per inquiry at $0.0075, agents could achieve substantial daily savings, equating to a potential net benefit of 222% ROI. However, challenges remain regarding the system’s effectiveness, particularly in handling complex queries. Independent agency perspectives indicate existing software often meets most needs, implying that while Axlerod shows potential, ongoing refinement and testing are crucial for broader acceptance in the industry.
