Musk Seeks Up to $134 Billion in Legal Dispute with OpenAI

Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for damages between $79 billion and $134 billion, alleging he was defrauded regarding his initial $38 million investment in OpenAI. Court filings, revealed by Musk’s attorney ahead of a jury trial set for April in Oakland, California, present calculations from expert witness C. Paul Wazzan. He estimates Musk is owed $65.50 billion to $109.43 billion in “wrongful gains” from OpenAI and $13.30 billion to $25.06 billion from Microsoft. Musk claims OpenAI shifted away from its nonprofit mission, misleading him. OpenAI has posted a rebuttal on its blog, suggesting Musk sought “full control” over the organization and raising concerns about his succession plans involving his children. As the trial approaches, Musk stated on his platform X, “Can’t wait to start the trial,” hinting at explosive revelations. The situation remains highly dynamic as both parties prepare for court.
