Ethical Dilemmas in Artificial Intelligence: Key Examples and Insights

The integration of AI in culture sparks critical ethical discussions. In 2016, a computer-generated painting, “The Next Rembrandt,” was created using deep learning algorithms analyzing 346 of the artist’s works, raising questions about authorship. Who is deemed the creator—the project orchestrators, the algorithms, or Rembrandt himself? Similarly, in 2019, Huawei’s AI completed Schubert’s unfinished Symphony No.8, further blurring lines between human and machine creativity. As AI’s role in art expands, the notion of authorship needs redefining to balance the rights of original artists and the algorithms producing new works. This evolution prompts an urgent need for innovative frameworks distinguishing originality from piracy and plagiarism, safeguarding artists’ rights and fair remuneration. UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence aims to establish an international standard to address these challenges, emphasizing the importance of creativity, integrity, and proper recognition within the cultural landscape.
