The Maharashtra government, in partnership with IIT Bombay, is creating an AI tool focused on language-based verification to identify suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas. This ₹3-crore initiative, led by the IT department, aims to support law enforcement by analyzing speech patterns, tone, and linguistic usage for preliminary identification. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans for a detention center for deportation, claiming that with AI, they aim to accurately identify and deport individuals. However, linguistic similarities between West Bengal residents and Bangladeshis pose challenges in differentiation. Currently, the tool demonstrates a 60% reliability rate in identifying non-West Bengal residents, while further investigations will follow based on findings. Fadnavis emphasized that infiltrators often enter through West Bengal, obtain forged documents, and exploit government schemes nationwide. The tool is expected to be fully operational within six months, enhancing the state’s capability to manage this critical issue.
