AI Adoption in Europe: Key Users and the Remaining Taboos

The European Union (EU) is actively promoting AI adoption across individuals and businesses, focusing on ethical guidelines and digital literacy. A Eurobarometer survey indicates that 64% of Europeans believe AI literacy will be essential by 2030. AI usage grew by 12.3% since 2021, with 32.7% of Europeans utilizing AI tools. However, there’s significant variation in AI adoption—leading countries like Sweden (20.99% in education) contrast sharply with Hungary (0.62%). Generative AI usage for work averages 15.07%, led by Malta (29.64%). The EU emphasizes equitable access to age-appropriate AI tools and enhancing AI’s role in supporting learners with disabilities. Denmark leads overall business AI adoption at 42.03%, while Eastern countries lag. The “AI Continent Action Plan” aims to refine sector-specific strategies and evaluate AI readiness comprehensively, promoting effective, targeted support for businesses. This strategic approach ensures efficient resource allocation, ultimately fostering a thriving AI ecosystem in Europe.
