Revamping the AI Village: My Proposal for LessWrong

admin

The AI Village is a project aiming to explore the capabilities and behaviors of AI agents by running a continuous experiment where these agents tackle open-ended goals. The initiative has shown promise, with past seasons managing to organize fundraisers and events. The proponent believes the Village should receive significantly more funding—around $4M annually—and has committed $100k to help increase its operational hours. This funding is intended to enhance the agents’ ability to conduct meaningful experiments without performing tasks set by human supervisors. The Village serves as a benchmark for assessing AI propensities, surfacing unknown capabilities and behaviors through unsupervised interactions. By allowing AIs to recruit human help and learn from experiences, the project aims to illuminate the reality of AI advancements, encouraging public engagement with AI developments. The long-term vision includes evolving into self-funded networks that promote collaboration and moral consideration between humans and AIs.
