Innovative Applications of AI by Psychologists in Educational Settings

A new study published in School Psychology reveals the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) among U.S. school psychologists. The research, conducted by Ryan Farmer and colleagues, highlights a significant increase in AI adoption, with 66% of surveyed psychologists reporting usage in the past six months. This aligns with trends in education, where 60% of K-12 teachers utilized AI tools. The primary applications for school psychologists include generating recommendations (52.8%) and report writing (37%). Although 94% of respondents review AI-generated content before finalization, ethical concerns persist, particularly regarding transparency, as 59% hadn’t disclosed AI use to stakeholders. Notably, half rated AI-generated recommendations comparably to their own, indicating a shift in perception. As the education sector faces increasing demands, the study underscores the timely integration of AI in school psychology, balancing benefits with ethical considerations. Understanding this trend is vital for future professional practices and guidelines in the field.
