Could Unregulated AI Tools Pose a Major Threat to NHS Patients?

admin

A MedTech expert has warned about the risks to patient safety and data privacy from the use of AI tools by GPs in NHS consultations. Dr. Andrew Whiteley, founder of Lexacom, expressed concern over unapproved ambient voice technology (AVT) that may breach data intelligence rules and compromise patient safety. He emphasized the need for these tools to comply with NHS standards before deployment. While AI could enhance efficiency in primary care, it shouldn’t jeopardize safety or security.

A letter from NHS leaders cautioned clinicians about the widespread use of non-compliant AVT solutions, threatening clinical safety and data protection. Whiteley highlighted the necessity for any AI solution to automatically redact personal data and store information within the UK for legal protection. He noted the public’s willingness to accept AI in healthcare, stressing the importance of responsible implementation to maintain trust and accountability among patients.
