Choosing Emacs for My Sci-Fi Novel in the Era of AI Writing Tools

The author’s upcoming science fiction novel explores a sentient AI set 500 years in the future. This AI interacts with users through voice commands, touch, and an advanced Brain-computer Interface (BCI). Since its inception in 2013, the protagonist has faced challenges conceptualizing a future BCI grounded in reality. During the pandemic, the author transitioned from traditional word processors to using Vim and Neovim, creating an Integrated Writing Environment (IWE) called OVIWrite, fostering a small community of users. However, as the novel’s deadline loomed, he sought a more focused tool and discovered Emacs, integrating features for enhanced writing productivity. Emacs’ ecosystem, user-friendly configurations, and Org-mode allowed for effortless manuscript handling. The novel’s AI takes inspiration from Emacs, showcasing a world where thought and writing intertwine through neural interfaces. In the next article, the author plans to detail their Emacs workflow for various writing projects.
