A University of Nebraska–Lincoln computer scientist, Byrav Ramamurthy, is spearheading three innovative projects to enhance the speed and efficiency of data networks by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), these projects tackle the challenges posed by vast datasets within modern scientific infrastructures. Two projects concentrate on analyzing high-volume data: one utilizes AI for routing logs from Internet2 to classify network traffic, while the other employs machine learning on caching logs from the Open Science Grid, optimizing data retrieval for high-energy physics research. The third initiative, also NSF-supported, investigates technologies to improve fiber-optic networks’ speed and energy efficiency. These advancements are crucial as global data demands escalate, emphasizing the intertwined future of AI and high-speed connectivity. Collaborators include Ramamurthy’s doctoral students and researchers from various institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
