WhatsApp Introduces AI-Powered Summaries for Your Unread Messages

WhatsApp has introduced an AI-powered feature that generates summaries of unread messages, simplifying the process of catching up on missed conversations. Users can access this feature by tapping on unread message notifications to receive quick, bulleted summaries from Meta AI, rather than sifting through every message. This utilizes Meta’s “Private Processing” technology, ensuring that messages and summaries remain confidential—accessible only to the user, with no visibility for WhatsApp or Meta employees. The feature is being rolled out first to English-speaking users in the U.S. and will expand to others later. It’s optional and defaults to off, allowing users to control its use through Advanced Chat Privacy settings. Comparatively, Apple has faced criticism with its similar feature, which has produced inaccurate summaries in news notifications, leading to its temporary disablement for news apps. WhatsApp’s focus on privacy aims to help it avoid similar issues as integrations mature.
