Disney has enforced its copyright by sending a cease-and-desist letter to Google in December 2025, demanding they stop the generation and distribution of content featuring its characters. This came shortly before Disney struck a pivotal deal with OpenAI, granting exclusive rights for AI-generated imagery related to its intellectual property (IP), including characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. In response, Google has updated its AI models, Gemini and Nano Banana, to block any prompts related to Disney characters. Users requesting Disney-related images receive error messages stating, “I can’t generate the image you requested.” Despite prior instances where these AI models generated Disney content, they will now comply strictly with the mandate. This agreement solidifies OpenAI’s position as the sole provider of officially licensed Disney-related AI content, highlighting the evolving landscape of copyright in AI technology and the importance of compliance with intellectual property laws.
