AI Tool Optimizes Feeding Tube Timing for Patients with Motor Neuron Disease

A groundbreaking AI tool developed by the University of Sheffield aims to revolutionize care for patients with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This innovative machine learning model predicts the need for a feeding tube, enabling clinicians to determine the optimal timing for a gastrostomy procedure, which is critical for maintaining nutrition and improving quality of life. By analyzing data from over 20,000 MND patients, the tool can forecast significant weight loss within a median error of just 3.7 months at diagnosis, reducing to 2.6 months upon re-evaluation. This proactive approach helps manage the disease’s unpredictable progression, empowering doctors and patients to make informed decisions about care. Published in eBioMedicine, this promising study is set to undergo a prospective clinical trial to implement the AI model as a standard component of MND treatment, ultimately enhancing patient dignity and survival.
