The U.S. State Department is advancing its use of artificial intelligence (AI) by launching “agentic AI,” which operates autonomously and enhances operational efficiency. CIO Kelly Fletcher highlighted the department’s commitment to embedding AI across its systems, aiming to democratize access and reduce administrative friction. The State Department has successfully implemented AI tools for translation and summarization, setting a precedent for federal usage. While agentic AI is in its early stages, its potential in areas like operations and inventory management is promising, with expectations that it may be integrated into a third of enterprise software by 2028. Ongoing training sessions for diplomats are facilitating the effective use of AI tools like the StateChat chatbot. Fletcher emphasized the importance of modernizing outdated systems and balancing safety and effectiveness in AI implementation. This strategic focus positions the State Department as a leader in AI innovation within the federal sector.
