Prayoga Institute of Education Research in Bengaluru is pioneering an AI-assisted instrument to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of materials for space applications. Funded by ISRO’s RESPOND program, the project, titled “Studies on Antibacterial Efficacy Assessment for Space and Terrestrial Environments,” aims to develop an automated colony counter that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify microbial colonies on surfaces. Led by Dr. Ramya Prabhu, with co-investigators Dr. Venkata Krishna, Dr. Om Prakash, and Dr. Sai Harshini, this two-year initiative addresses critical microbial contamination issues in healthcare, food processing, and aerospace environments. The instrument’s versatility allows for its application in both crewed and uncrewed missions, highlighting its relevance in maintaining hygiene and safety standards in confined spacecraft and beyond. The anticipated outcomes support ISRO missions and have broader implications for medical and food industry practices by ensuring reliable microbial detection.
